Today marks the beginning of a new year and the beginning of my new blog – WHY LA PAZ?
Throughout much of 2008, my wife and I contemplated retirement and relocation. I’d been in Oregon almost 40 years and I was up for a change – any change. Marty had previously spent 10 years in Mexico and her two grown sons were living in Cabo San Lucas, at the southern tip of Mexico’s Baja Peninsula, so we took the month of December off and flew south to investigate. By the time we returned to Portland, just after New Year’s Day, 2009, we had accepted a 6-month house sitting position in Baja California Sur and our future was cast!
We spent the next 4 months putting our affairs in order and liquidating most of our accumulated household items. We also traded our sedan for an SUV and secured a storage unit in Portland to hold things we couldn’t sell or squeeze into the SUV. We finally hit the road in early May and arrived at our temporary home in Todos Santos on May 14, 2009. We spent the summer about halfway between Los Cabos and La Paz and by the time our house sitting gig was over and we had to move somewhere else, we chose La Paz over Cabo or Todos Santos. But why La Paz?
